Seeing if hard-drive or SSD was ever used

June 18th, 2018

so I’m in the process of buying an SSD from a buyer who claims that its never been used and never been plugged in even (although opened). being the paranoid tech that i am, the worst case scenario would be that he planted a keylogger on it of some sort and hid it (in a undetectable partition?).
now i know that storage can almost never be completely erased so is there any way to check if this ssd has truly never been used?

Answer #1
Will tell you how many power-ups it’s had and how many running hours.
They might be there, if it’s been factory tested, but power-up should be no more than 2 or 3 and running time less than 1 hour (the minimum recorded, I think)
Answer #2
Yes it is in the S.M.A.R.T information that is read only stored in the drive itself.
Another app that can read it is Hard Disk Senti.
A handy app for checking your disks and doing tests.
Answer #3
You could use a Recovery program as well e.g. “Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional”.
You will be able to recover most of what was on the drive even after most formats!
