Nvidia 266.58 >> Windows 8

I have an old game called Silent Hunter 3 which I love playing and with Windows 8 it doesn’t work for several reasons, first and most it is required to run at 1024 x 768 and second every driver after 266.58 was not compatible. After reading several other sites and seeing that people used that version I set out to download it. The issue I have even if its Windows 7 64 or Windows Vista 64bit it comes back and tells me that its not compatible. The hurdle is just to set my resolution to 1024×768 first so I can run this game that I miss playing.
The main error is Can’t Initialize 3D Program.
If maybe there is an app that can force my res down to e.g. 4:3 @ 1024×768 please let me know since I am running @ 1824 x 1014.
Any help much appreciated.

Can’t you change the res from, right click desktop > screen resolution ?

A – that’s the weirdest resolution I’ve ever seen.. what the hell screen has 1824 x 1014?
B – installing that old a driver will bugger up any modern game you might want to play – it might even screw up your media player (e.g. MPC-HC uses latest DX dlls.
Possible answer – try a portable XP or virtual machine XP.
