Making games run at certain resolutions?

Hey with downloaded games, i know you can enter some certain commands in the properties of the .exe to make it do things. I am just wondering is there a command to make my game run at 1280×1024 resolution because every time i restart the game it goes back to 640×480. I mean this properties box if anyone is wondering

take a look here, they have a link to download a program that runs it in windowed mode. That might be of use.
