I’m guessing you don’t need help getting the file from the TV!
You should be able to convert it using HandBrake:

What do you mean when you say it doesn’t recognize the file?
Answer #8
Sorenson Squeeze and Promedia Carbon will do the job.
Answer #9
better idea whats the best method of recording tv so i can play it on my pc cheers
Answer #10
It depends on the TV and the encoder it has built in, If it can do MP4 then its a no brainer.
there’s no reason you cant play these files on a pc you just need the right directshow filters like the mainconcept broadcast ones included with Sorenson.

better idea whats the best method of recording tv so i can play it on my pc cheersDepends what you want to record from really. If it’s free view, Tesco do loads of cheap USB free view recorders – their own-brand is very good but if it’s something like Sky – your options are closing pretty fast because every piece of kit capable of recording that stuff seems to have been discontinued. At least in the UK anyway. Generally though, most shows end up being up for download on the internet!
Don’t you want to work out your initial problem first though? It would kill me to walk away just like that – it could be something so simple…
Answer #12
STOP! m2ts is a file format that you usually get from ripping a bluray disc or from recording in hd using sony camcorders. what you can use to read these files are almost any video players on your pc. the only catch is how powerful is your cpu/gpu in decoding this file. you DO NOT NEED TO RE-ENCODE it if you want to “change” it to another file format. im not sure why you want to change it in the first place since m2ts is already playable on most computers.
what you need is to simply REMUX it into an mkv containter if you would like that since m2ts file already has an avc encoded video stream and also since mkv is a versatile video containter that you can put almost any video formats in.

if you would like to re-encode it however to reduce the file size i find RIPBOT264 gui works well with m2ts files.

no still no recognising file?
you’re doing something wrong cause’ I’ve done BD encodes with megui but as said above, ripbot.
Answer #14
Thank you for all the info guys, i’ve tried everything suggested.
Xaero, I did as you said and still getting the file not recognised error… I’ve been looking around and apparently other people have been having the same problem – it must have something to do with where the file comes from? I’m using my sony tv to record from freeview and the file i’m getting is totally unreadable by every program i’ve tried so it must be different to other m2ts files? Frustrating.
Answer #15
You could check out the file with Mediainfo to see what’s inside it..

i have a strong feeling that your recorded m2ts file is encrypted only for bluray player playback and not for pc.
