Is this HDD compatible with a HP nx7400 laptop?

July 31st, 2013

Hi,
My son would like to replace his old 80GB HDD which came with his HP nx7400 laptop in 2007. He would need at least 1.5TB he said.
However, concerning to the manual it seems that the laptop only supports hard disks up to 120GB HDD. Could you guys confirm it?
Here's the manual:

(check the 2nd and 5th page)
All help is greatly appreciated in advance!

Edit:
Thank you so much for your responses guys! Would this HDD be compatible with the computer?

The PDF you have provided shows the different hardware options that HP actually provides to the market. However, I am unsure whether there is any cap to the disk size allowed on the hardware/motherboard itself. On the side note, you may wish to purchase external portable HDD which is relatively cheap.

This is a bad time for buying hard-disks as the Thailand flood has shot the HDD prices real high. But if you wish to buy, then I too would recommend using an external portable one.

It will support the 1.5TB. The 945GM supports drives up to 128 PetaBytes but since it’s only SATA 150Mbps you’ll only get that much out of it. SATA2 drives will automatically fall back to SATA1 speeds so you wont need to configure anything. Screw the manual. However, make sure the drive fits in thickness wise. Measure the thickness of the existing drive or any extra room if available as drives differ in thickness.
Answer #4
Yes it will support but. my opinion buy external HDD.
Answer #5
If you buy an external HDD you won’t have the hassle of moving data and having to install Windows again either.
Answer #6
The restriction probably refers to the version of XP that was installed in 2007, since XP SP1 the OS will support hdd’s bigger than 128GB.

Stick a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB hybrid drive in it, and use an external drive for backups

The Spinpoint M8 is 9.5mm thick, you would have to measure whatever is in the lappy now to see if it will fit.
They are not a bad little drive, very reliable, I’ve got one in my netbook docking station, however, they are only 5400 rpm/8MB cache and not exactly the drive I would choose for an OS these days as they are a little slow, great for storage though.
