Internet Broadband Failure

December 24th, 2019

Ok, so we used to be on Virgin Media Broadband which we recieved through co-axial cables: There was no interference with my BT line. However we have just moved to Orange Wireless Broadband which is supposed to be a 5.5mb connection with unlimited usage. However it is clear that we are DEFINITELY not recieving this. Firstly our phone line is unbelievably crackly, and everytime the phone rings, our internet is disconnected. This is very annoying as our phone rings quite a lot. Download speeds are around 10-17kb per second which is awful. I don’t think I’ve ever recieved such a bad internet connection.
Furthermore whenever I’m playing on the ps3, I’m constantly lagging to the point that it’s unbearable to play with. The slow internet really doesn’t help. We’ve tried ranting t orange over the phone but they say it’s BT’s fault. We then then phoned BT and they said it’s not their problem basically. I have no idea what has happened. To be honest, our virgin media wasnt the best of connections as we had the ‘S’ package but this didn’t cause any lag on the ps3. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated: I’d be happy to provide more info if it would help. I’m get ~ censored ~ smiling off now tbh!

Answer #1
Have you installed the filter in the phone socket? It’s essential for the broadband to work correctly.
Answer #2
I’ve connected the broadband through the filter provided with the router.
Answer #3
filter provided
you have it connected to the wall socket before the router ?
Answer #4
Yep. The filter says connect to wall socket. Its a ADSL filter.
Answer #5
I don’t mean to sound rude or anything but you should of shopped around before getting orange internetz, A lot of people have bad experiences with them and as for a broadband service, they fail. Orange internet = down your phone line so my bet is there’s something wrong with your BT connection, How far are you from the exchange? What’s your ping when you do a speedtest? Best thing you can probably do is get a tech guy from BT out and ask them if they think it’s right! Say something like “my phone isn’t working” to make them come out if their still saying it’s not their fault. BT customer service is crap and they’ll say anything to make you shut up lol.
Good luck man.
Answer #6
it reversible, it have the same female connection on both ends ?
can you try a diff walll socket
try connecting the filter to a phone and direct connect you router to a wall socket
seem some work that way

Dw I did shop around ahah. We were going to get O2 and had got it but they were providing too much service in our area to give us a decent connection. Someone, don’t know what they were thinking but, they said that orange might give us what we wanted. it reversible, it have the same female connection on both ends ?

I’ll check the link but I’m not sure what you mean by trying to connect the filter to a phone and direct connect the router to a wall socket. How can i direct connect a router to the wall socket without the splitter?
Answer #8
Also, dont forget, your not paying for a 5.5mb line, your paying for UPTO that speed. Their is no guarentee your going to get it. a 5.5mb speed is going to be max about 700Kbps download. Thats MAX. Your more likely to be getting 400-500…
Any real reason why you switched from virgin?
Answer #9
Jus curious. Y did u move from Virgin Media Broadband to orange
Am on virgin media 20mb and get great dl speeds
Answer #10
Sorry for double post. Speed Test Results. I think I just died a little inside

Answer #11
cant see your results. might be better off just posting what your getting. lol
Answer #12
buddy use this site to upload ur image

Answer #13
We switched from virgin media as we were getting a real slow connection: The 20mb connection was too expensive hah we were getting a 2mb connection. Btw we’re paying for an ‘Up to 8mb Line’ Their website said that we’d get around 5.5mbs from their connection.
Answer #14
TBH I’m off to bed, I know theirs a load of other guys on here that can help but my advice is this..
1) ensure all plugs are connected propperly
2) If accessing it through wireless, wire your connectiong and run speed test again
3) If this download speed is really poor first thing in the morning call orange and complain
4) If poor download speed continues say your moving service (may help)
5) If all else fails and all your set up is right then it is more than likely due to position from the exchange, and poor quality lines. Either that or someone else closer to the exchange is leeching.
I’m not going to bash orange as I haven’t used them, but haven’t heard good things. Ring up first thing in the morning and complain though. Serious. The sooner you do it the more chance you have of getting out quickly and painlessly. lol

They’re website will say you “could” get up to 5.5mb on their connection i would presume. They never give a direct speed as its not possible.
Never heard of problems with anything other than the slowest speed virgin. Was that a hard wired speed test or wireless speed test?

I know that feeling. Ring up the cancellations department mate, and say that you DO NOT want to be transferred to a call centre abroad. – Beleive me, that works
Answer #18
Haha! Cheers for the help guys. Last week I tried to cancel, they said pay the rest of your contract. I was like hell no went ballistic etc. Should I ask for MAC code?
Answer #19
How can i direct connect a router to the wall socket without the splitter?
that’s the way some work
no filter on router/internet connection
and all phones go thro the filter

A technical answer before my rant.
Try one of these if all else fails and your junction box is suitable:-
http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25075&s_cid=btb_FURL_accelerator
It genuinely works, my speed went from 4.5mb to 6mb almost instantly (check my post history) as a skeptic of snake oil fixes I picked one up on ebay for 5 or something.
Now for the rant.
Orange………face/palm………I got them forced on me after Freeserve became Wanadoo then Orange, they are an utter bunch of f**kwits who I had to threaten legal action on as they broke my broadband with their ‘upgrades’ then kept messing me about for 6 weeks before they would release my line.
First if you can go out an buy a mobile broadband dongle, getting shot of Orange is a nightmare and mobile would make it bearable. Next tell them they are in breach of contract in that the service that you paid for is not being provided and therefore you are terminating it, also any attempt to take money from your bank via Direct Debit you will report as fraud. They will try and palm you off in that the fault is at your end (it still could be) but simply state the line has been checked out and no fault found.
Finally if all else fails put a complaint in to Ofcom, I got more action in 24hours from Orange after I did this than in the previous 2 weeks. Consumer power in the UK is massively on the side of the customer its just that most people aren’t aware of this or aren’t up for the arguments it entails.
BTW the filter is still the most likely answer.
Answer #21
so do i need to buy a different cable that allows me to directly connect my modem to the wall socket?

cheeers mate. Ofcom sounds good but I might try the accelerator. My sister is on contract with orange broadband on 35 pounds a month for her htc phone: Could I incorporate that??
Answer #23
ok sorry if it sounds a daft question but if you have more than 1 phone socket in the house, have you put a filter on each individual socket ?
if not you should have a filter on each socket (or think you should).
also bt have a self test bit on there website http://www2.bt.com/btPortal/application?origin=ftpd_hub_page.jsp&event=bea.portal.framework.internal.portlet.event&pageid=ftpd_hub&portletid=ftpd_hub&portletns=ftpd_hub&wfevent=event.fp_start_fp_webflow&com.bea.event.type=linkclick&oLDesc=faultPlacementDsc&oSiteArea=con.mya&oPJsp=ftpd_hub_page.jsp&oPt=ftpd_hub&oLName=faultPlacementParams&oOJsp=&oPg=ftpd_hub&siteArea=con.mya
not sure if it works for people using bt lines via orange but worth a check.
gl with it
Answer #24
The easiest way to test would be to disconnect every phone in the house frm every socket to make sure nothing is interfering, followed by plugging the filter into the wall socket then finally plug the router into the ADSL port on the filter.
If that doesn’t work then try another filter if you have one, if it does work then plug phones back in one at a time (make sure a filter is on each one) as a further test.
Answer #25
The house is quite big but as far as I know there are two phone sockets that working and they both have filters in. They only provided two filters tbh. Cheers for the link am on it now

Meh, That “someone” who recommend you to orange probably worked for them and got commission for you joining their services. If I’m honest, You would of been a lot better off with someone like BE, good speeds, good pings, good customer service and probably cheaper than orange tbh! few questions:
are you using wireless?
speed test? upload to tinypic..
since you got orange internet, has it always been slow or is it a recent thing?
when you had orange installed, did a tech guy do it?
I was on the 20meg connection from VM and I was happy, good service etc but then they released the 50meg connection and I had that. I know their not exactly cheap and I know there’s a lot more services that are cheaper etc but if you want quality services, ya’ll gotta pay! unless you’ve got an hacked modem, of course!
Answer #27
Try plugging the router into the Master socket rather than an extension. That might mean using it wirelessly which isn’t recommended if your having problems but worth trying briefly.
You could try the test socket which is located beneath the Master socket cover, you need to unscrew the top and remove the cover to reveal it. Plug the filter into that and the router into the filter. That will bypass the effects of the extension(s).
Log into your router’s webpage and check your connection speed and SN margin etc. It’s often 192.168.1.254 to access it and then login.
Username is often Administrator and the password can be the serial number of the router or sometimes the pass is Administrator also but that password was stopped on recent routers as it’s a security flaw.
Sometimes they can mess up the activation, my Aunt just had broadband activated on Friday and since then her phone hasn’t worked properly she made the mistake of going with Talk talk which had me cussing under my breath.
