Installing Mac OSX

January 21st, 2020

My friends Macbook HDD is broken. And I don’t have a DVD re-writer (odd, I know).
I’m taking my spare HDD from my computer (which is a laptop HDD) and going to put it in his Macbook. The only problem is installing the OSX. Is there a way I can install via Windows? Or is there a way to create a USB installer?

I gues you will need an other Mac computer to create the bootable image on an usb and then further follow the instructions on how to install mac osx
hope this helps

Right, firstly, I did google it first, as I’m not an idiot. Also, I don’t have access to another Mac to create a bootable USB – which is why I’m asking here.

There is no way to make a bootable OSX USB in Windows. You need another mac or at least a hackintosh to be able to make one. Can also be a virtual hackintosh, as long as USB works.
Answer #6
well perhaps the solution is then that someone here with a mac (not me) creates a usb boot disc and uploads it

Apparently, PowerISO can do this from Windows.

If you search ” Mac OS-X Install” on the forum, you will find plenty of disk Images you can download..
Answer #9
You could also do it from a Linux installation using the ‘dd’ command. Basically get a ISO disk image and dd into the usb’s device path (usually something like /dev/usb1).
So your command would be something such as:
dd if=~/your/iso/path of=/dev/usb1
Alternatively, you could also run dd from Windows, but Cygwin… well, it’s a horrible thing to install.
