Flat Screen TV Size Requirements for HD?

August 4th, 2016

Hey guys, I figured you all are the smartest people to ask in regards to my potential purchase of a new flat screen TV.
Here’s the deal… I already have a 51 or so inch flat screen HDTV in my living room and it looks great… but now I need another flat screen for my bedroom for the times when my daughter is here and I don’t feel like watching My Little Pony… Here’s the dilemma, my dad told me that when I bought this current TV that you should ALWAYS buy a flat screen HDTV that is 43 inches or larger or else the screen will have black boxes on the outside or whatever… basically he said anything under 43 inches will make the shows in HD appear smaller than normal and pretty ~ Lovely ~… so is this true? I really don’t need/want anything huge for my bedroom… a nice 32 inch HDTV would be great, but I’m worried about what my dad said… so, is it true or is my dad just blowing smoke? I can’t afford another $500+ tv right now.. but something around $250 would be perfect and I just want to make sure I’ll still get the HD quality that I’m used to.
Anyone know the real deal on this or is my dad right? Let me know.. thanks guys!

I’ve got a 32″ LG LED screen in my room, picked it up for 200. excellent quality (for me anyway)
43 inches or larger or else the screen will have black boxes on the outside or whatever...
I’ve never seen this, a HD input (720p+) should cover the whole panel.
If anything a 1080p signal on a bigger screen would look worse.

No offence, but you dad seems to be completely clueless. All what he said is total rubbish. HD is HD, no matter what size the screen is. The resolution is what makes HD.

Agree, your dad missed this one. Older TV shows may not fill the screen to all corners due to the way it was recorded.
Everything I watch in HD fills the screen,
Maybe pick up a second new TV for pops

I have a 39 inch 1080p HDTV in my bedroom and I love it. No black boxes like your Dad is saying. I’m guessing a salesman who needed a bigger commission check told him to go 43 inches or bigger LOL.

Haha.. well to my dad’s defense, the flat screen he has was made by a company that doesn’t even exist anymore.. lol.. and he CLAIMS what I said in the first post was absolutely true back when he got his TV.. suuuuuuure! he got it like 5 or 6 years ago. Thanks for the help guys! Much appreciated!

You must all download then, as i don’t think i have had a bluray movie cover the whole screen. You get the black bars due to the aspect ratio, and nothing to do with HD. HD is 16:9 ratio mostly, whereas most movies aren’t made to that ratio. So even bigger tv’s will still get black bars.

Decide on the best fit for your bedroom, and look for a 1080p tv to fit and comes within your budget.
Think of what functions you want on your tv, eg smart tv, Wi-Fi, Ethernet connection, number of HDMI sockets etc
Good luck

Also take note on how big bedroom is. I bought someone a 32 inch thinking for their very small bedroom that it would be big enough. Looking at it from the doorway it looks like a computer monitor
