New laptop – what should i buy?

February 8th, 2020

Hi,
I am looking for a new laptop, and I was wondering if anyone here could help me decide which best suits my needs.
I don’t have much knowledge about laptop hardware, and all I know is from what I have learned in the last few days searching for a laptop.
About my usage habits – I’m a student so it has to be mobile (15.6 inch will do), I use it mostly for internet, documents, watching youtube, movies and TV series. Every once in a while I also use after effects and premiere pro for video editing. rarely i play games, usually not something very demanding.
I can spend up to about 1700$ on it, so I want it to be powerful.
My needs:
– graphics card – just so after effects and premiere pro would work fluently
– performance – I really want fast performance while using the computer for my daily work
– light weight preferably
– screen – I prefer matte
Must have:
– 15.6 (or something close) screen
– full HD screen
– at least 500gb of storage (preferably SSD)
– at least 8gb of ram
The lenovo Y50-70 looks pretty good for my when looking at the hardware (Intel core i7 4720HQ, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage, 1920×1080, 15.6′, Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M for the equivalent of 1500$) but i saw some bad reviews about it for some reason, so i thought I would try here.
If you have any better offers, or want to recommend on the Y50-70, I would love to hear it.
Thanks.

Answer #1
Although the 4720HQ is a new release it is a 2 year old design. I would look for something with a 5th gen CPU. Or wait for Skylake which is a whole new ballgame.
Edit:
Never mind. Just realized available 5th gen i7 is 2 core.
Answer #2
The Y50 is certainly great for its value (the Y70 is not as good in my opinion, since it is bulkier without being much faster) You can also look at the ASUS ROG lineup, and from what I’ve seen, Gigabyte has a few interesting choices too
Answer #3
bad reviews about lenovo generally cuz they bundled their products with adware that comes preinstalled , this applies the products that are produced in last quarter of 2014 , then they removed it , at least that was what i read.
i would also buy asus laptop , especially rog models . although it is named as gaming laptop , it will satisfy your all needs.
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/G771JW/
this seems very good , and should be at your price range but interestingly i couldnt find it at any popular online stores just to confirm it
edit : there are a few models of it , i mentioned the one with 4gb gtx 960 gpu and 256gb ssd along with 1.5tb standard harddrive.
Answer #4
I would probably spend around half of your budget, maybe $1000 and save the rest for something else.

thats also logical point of view , which would be enough for your needs at good not best level. I can spend up to about 1700$ on it, so I want it to be powerful.

this sentence of your made me thought you want something powerful beyond your needs and fits your budget. tbh personally i see laptops as a waste of money for the performance they deliver , i would buy the cheapest as possible if i was buying for myself and would build another desktop system for gaming and watching things with the money that i have saved.
Answer #6
for speed and games, get a desktop….this is not what a laptop was built for, otherwise go for i7 or the fastest you can buy….
Answer #7
Look at the dell 7000 series even the 17″ model is affordable with a premium metal costruction

Thanks for all the replays!

Yeah, exactly. I also found it weird that the 5th gen are much less powerful than the 4th gen. they say that the 5th gen are more energy conservative, but i don’t want to compromise for performance, and i am usually plugged in so the power usage doesn’t really concern me that much.

I checked some of their models, and it seems not that different from lenovo y50-70 specification wise. I’ll look into it more, thanks!

Well, as i said, I’m a student, and I move a lot with my computer. I use it for everything in different places (movie editing, work and gaming) so a desktop is not for me. I have a desktop, that I haven’t turned on for a few years.
Most of my day i spend using my laptop, so I thought a good laptop will be a good investment as it will make my life easier (and faster).

Yeah, I checked them out too, but I think the lenovo y50-70 gives me more for the same price. But I’ll definitely consider.

You can purchase the Apple MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch for $1799
I want something that will last a few years. Dell computers won’t last.

Does Diablo III work on Windows 7 64-bit

February 8th, 2020

Hi. I just wanted to know if Diablo III is confirmed and known to work on Win & 64-bit. I am not interested in knowing about Win 32 bit so please do not post about that. I have read on a number of sites about there being problems with setup on 64 bit architectures; however, I would like to know of other people’s experiences with Diablo III set up. I am thinking of buying a genuine CD of D3 as I am aware that there are some server / set up problems when installing a cracked version of it; hence my interest in using a genuine version of it. Many thanks in advance for answering my question.
Answer #1
Yes..I been playing it since it was released..Win7 64 bit..
Answer #2
Windows 7 came out way before Diablo 3 showed up.
I’ve yet to see any high performance rig use X86 and cap themselves to 3.5GB of memory.
64 bit has never been an issue, why? because every fricken decent person is using it.
So it will work, and yes your question is a bit silly.

First. Thanks to both of you for your answers. Greatly appreciated.
However, why do you feel that my question was ‘silly’. I don’t think it was silly. :frown:
For example, if you have a family and they ask you a question, such as your younger boy or girl and they ask you what this or that is for, do you tell them that their question is silly? If so, then you may or might not be a very good parent to them. If you do any kind of customer-service work, and your customer asks you a question, do you tell your customers that their question is silly? What if they don’t know and you might be their only source of information on that product/service?
Please dont tell people that what-ever question they ask is silly. It is not necessarily silly to them but it might actually be important to that person. Have a great day!
Answer #4
it wouldn’t have been silly if you had asked does it work on mac. Because majority of the games don’t work on Mac. While All games are built for the windows platform work on Windows.
Also note he said your question is silly and didn’t go with any hard words. Most people on these boards will give you a new one because this type of question can be answered by the First Search result on Google. Yes First RESULT will literally give you the answer. So yes to me this question was silly but you asked it and it was answered right. and at the end you were told that your question was unnecessary as you could have just looked at the buy page of the game or if you were going to a store to buy it and look at the box and that would tell you. Anyways questions are not stupid but some are really unnecessary. Hope that clears it up for you. But don’t take it personally We are all here to help each other.

.mdi files viewer-editer-printer-convertor required

February 8th, 2020

i wish to know about any programme or utlity by which i can view/edit/print and convert .mdi files directly to Execel formt (XLS).
Thanks.

Answer #1
You will have to do some research.
MDI is a graphics format (similar to TIFF) so any conversion would have to be passed through an OCR
engine to get text and then be formatted for Excel.
I can get you started with ABBYY — it claims to be able to convert graphics to Excel — but you will have to see
if it can input MDI — also there are other OCR suites out there.

Accessible from Windows Explorer With a single right-mouse click, ScanTo Office converts your existing image file into an editable and searchable document and sends it directly to necessary applications or exports it to any supported output format or application.
Layout retained in output document ABBYY ScanTo Office converts your paper documents or scanned images to editable Microsoft Word or Excel files with the look and feel of the original document. No need to retype or reformat your information.

What is the Motherboard?
So is that 2 x 2gig and 1 x 4gb stick?
In your motherboard book (bios book) it usually states certain configurations that you can and can’t use on a motherboard. Let me know the brand and model. Did you try swapping slots around?
I personally would of gone 2 x 4gb or 4 x 2gb.
Answer #4
Its a GIGABYTE M61PME-S2P <-Motherboard
Answer #5
1. 2 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8GB of system memory (Note 1)
2. Dual channel memory architecture.
3. Support for DDR2 1066/800/667 MHz memory modules This is my motherboard:

I have one more problem my USB Storage Key keeps overheating when i plug it in any ideas ?
Answer #7
OK you have something confused mate.
The motherboard model you gave me has to ram slots. So you isntalled 2 x 2gb to make the 4gig. First swap the ram around (change slots) its simple but can help.
Make sure the ram is seated properly.
I am guessing that you have messed with the bios. or you have bought DDR3 ram and nor DDR2. If you are sure you bought DDR2 then thats good. If you bought DDR3 there is your problem.
If you have been playing with the bios. Reset values to failsafe or factory. Start again. Dont change timing, are you trying to overclock?
If it can be set to auto (in bios) then set to auto.
Answer #8
No both RAMs are DDR2 Both are Dualsised 2GB 800mhz. And yes they are two RAMs each 2GB i didnot mess whit BIOS they are seated properly i will try swaping them now but dont know how its gonna help since Windows detects 3gb means it must be detecting both but only one is detected fully or something.
I didnt mess whit bios i set it to Load Optimized Settings i will try what you said and get back to you.
Answer #9
K mate. Just dbl check that the bios is reading 800 on the ram. Bios are usually right in detecting but nothing is perfect.
You sound like you mostly know what you are doing with setup. I am guessing that the ram is new? If all else fails 1 stick is faulty. Take them both to the store and have them checked. If you have a friend using windows 7 or x64 bit OS try their machine first. You probably know x86 os wont display 4gb ram. If a friend has 2 x 2gb try their ram in your pc. All this as you know will out rule possible causes
My hope is you didnt buy them online, thats always a pain with returns, the waiting.
PM me when your ready if you need to mate
EDIT
Check you have the latest BIOS. The latest for that board is F3A.
The chipset on that board is very outdated mate. If the bios driver isnt correct it may be reading the ram wrong.

Is it possible that Graphic Card is consuming the missing 1GB. The thing is mz graphic Card is Ati Radeon HD4650 1GB RAM when i go to Display Settings and Click adavnced it show me its using Dedicated 1gb and shared 1gb and total avalible memory is 2gb. Total memorz avalible for my graphic card should be only 1gb not 2 so i am wondering if the Graphic Card is consuming that 1gb from actual ram.

Are you absolutely positively sure you running 64bit? Does it say 64bit in system properties. I can’t see any other explanation here.

Burning iso’s etc with my unrecognisable drive

February 8th, 2020

Hi guys, heres my problem. Basically Ive just got a new Dell Latitude D630 laptop, two in fact
Both have the same problems….
– Blank CDs/DVDs are not recognised when inserted. Apparently from what Ive read this is a very common problem and is a Windows based problem surprise surprise. I solved this issue by editing the registry (following a forum step through guide). So now when I click on the DVD Drive in My Computer it does open the drive with the blank disc in. However after I solved that problem….
– I cannot actually burn with the drive. It is compatible with windows etc etc. I’m trying to burn a ISO file to a disc. Ive used a number of different software – MagicISO, PowerISO, and lastly Nero. None of them seem to recognise the CD in the drive. Nero goes through the burn process completely & says completed, although nothing is burned onto the disc. This is so damn frustrating and I couldnt find any other topic that matched my problem closely enough. HUGE thanks in advance to any of you clever people out there who can solve this issue.

Answer #1
ahm take your notebook back to dell? i can’t really help you here, but still i have a dell inspiron 1720 and i don’t have any problems at all with it:|
Answer #2
But I really dont think its a manufacturer problem considering the number of other people who have experienced the same problem. I hit f12 after a reboot and ran diagnostics and it threw an error at me (a really long code) when it checked the DVD-ROM device. It surely isnt just bad luck to get two laptops with the exact same problem and have others experiencing similar issues. Oh and cant really take it back to Dell as got them brand new off a business collegue who had surplus stock
Answer #3
… surplus stock ? that sounds “good” … go to a repair pc/laptops and give them your laptop to see what is the problem, can’t you change the dvd? maybe cables aren’t attached correctly in the laptop good luck
Answer #4
no Im pretty sure everythings connected. The computer recognises that the drive is there, reads and plays audio cds, etc, but doesnt like blank cds. Ive tried different brands too. If anyone else has heard of this problem, please post some info. Thanks

Daemon Tools Installation Help

February 8th, 2020

Hi, I downloaded Football Manager and got it working with Daemon tools but I only downloaded the trial version and now that’s run out, Football Manager wont work. I’ve tried downloading a different version but I don’t know how to crack it and I’m really stuck.
Any Help?
Cheers.

Answer #1
use deamon tools lite, itd free! Yuo can still mount images with it.

Answer #2
Since you;ve had a trial version before. Uninstall it with your uninstaller -> clean your temp file with disk cleaner -> clean your reg with registry mechanic -> restart -> re-install using the cracked version.
Simply replace the crack provided on the folder you’ve extracted with the original EXE in Daemon tools directory. & follow the instructions included on a notepad.
This should solve it. Otherwise you’re doing something wrong.
Answer #3
As suggested…DAEMON Tools Lite is all what you need…Free and all..DAEMON Tools Pro have extra stuff that you will never use…And it’s hard to crack…

What’s the best possible laptop I can buy for 500 – 600 British pounds?

February 8th, 2020

My budget is £500 – £600. Main use is Netflix and Reddit. No gaming.
I’d like an SSD (128gb is fine), i5 or greater and 8GB RAM or more.
I’d appreciate any suggestions.
(I don’t want a tablet)

You have quite a budget there, I think finding a laptop that suits you won’t be a problem.
In my experience, try to aim for a LENOVO or DELL and you will be fine.
