Burning Error Occured on brand new DVD-R DL

January 26th, 2020

I am burning data files from an external HDrive connected via USB on my laptop. The files are quite big and so I bought DVD-R DL 8.5GB Verbatim to burn them.
I used CDburnerXP to burn the data disc choosing the files directly from the external hard drive (so i did no copy the files to my pc beforehand) and the first 4 dvds burned perfectly.
I tried burning the 5th one and an error occured saying:

Okay so I figured it was a lucky (unlucky) failure so I just skipped it and inserted another dvd but the same error occured again! It’s starting to piss me off and I cannot waste more dvds like this.
Should I switch burning software? If you think so, then to what? Roxio? Nero?
Does it matter that I burned the data directly from the external hard drive to the dvds?
Also in the error it says something about 32 characters and my mind went straight to the file length matter. Is that a possible issue/reason for the failure? I must say the file path isn’t short.
Example:
the data i burned on the disc had this path
E:\lesson5_20Feb2009\omada4_20Feb2009\lesson5_omada4_20Feb2009p2.mpg
Doesnt seem long enough to cause an error to me but anyway.
Hopefully someone will be able to help out before I waste anymore dvds!!
Here are my drive’s specs:

From what i found it looks like the drive itself is shot

Do you have errors on event viewer?
You should upgrade its firmware,That could do the trick

hey robbie thanks for the advice. i tried updating my drive but here’s what i came up with.
the nero infotool shows the current firmware of my drive which is 1.83 as you can see in screenshot but when I try to update my drive from Sony here’s what’s said.
Read Before your download this Update!!!
You can only update from Firmware versions 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1,04 and 1.05. Previous firmware version(s) other than mentioned here are probably OEMs and therefore cannot be updated with this file. Contact your PC manufacturer (FTS, DELL, HP....) if you require firmware updates for these drives.
You can verify your current installed firmware with NERO InfoTool: http://www.nero.com
If you are certain that your drive is non-OEM, then click here to download the update file. Otherwise, contact your computer manufacturer!

So i’m guessing I shouldn’t update through that site yes?

Try with Nero ;>
Answer #4
Get the firmware update from your laptop manufacturer site

You can burn “normal” dvd’s without problems? Or the error happens only with the DL disks… Could be a physical error on your drive, or maybe can be resolved with a firmware upgrade… Or you can try also using a new software… I’ve lost about 4 medias in a row using nero… So changed the software and then the problem was solved…
So, try to Burn them with IMGBurn… Is freeware and a very nice soft…
Answer #6
What do you think of Roxio Creator?
Answer #7
I stick with the ImgBurn… To be honest, i’ve never used the Roxio… Try both of them and see if one of them can solve you problem
Answer #8
roxio was shipped with my laptop so I guess its best if I could try that.
Answer #9
IMGBURN FTW! I’ve burned hundreds of DL DVD’s using this software, especially xbox360 ISO’s and barely every get failed burns. Might be an idea to move the files from the external drive to the laptop incase it affects burn speed etc. Also make sure no other applications are running that might want to use the dvd drive, burners need to lock the drive and some programs like vlc, windows media player running can screw it up…

as weird as it might be the 2 times the disc failed was when I left the laptop at ease and went out
all other times while burning i was using the laptop, browsing and so on.
lol
