Best file erase algorithm?

Which one is the more thoroughly?
DOD 5220.22-M (3x)
National Security Agency (7x)
Gutmann (35x)
Or am I missing some other algorithms?
Which would be the best software to completely erase data, to ensure recovery is (near) impossible?
