Asus or EVGA GTX550 Ti?

September 27th, 2013

Guys, does the brand of video card matter? I’m planning to upgrade my GTS 250 to a GTX 550 Ti 1 GB. These two brands are available in my country (Philippines):

http://www.pcx.com.ph/index.php/asus-gtx550-ti-1gb-ddr5-192bit.html?SID=0c9idhsqsniit3b70ng1s0a386
Which one is better? Thanks!

not really unless the cooling is better on one of them.
(second link doesn’t work here.

That’s not much of an upgrade from a 250 to a 550, you won’t be satisfied with your upgrade.
Go for the GTX 560 Ti 2Gb. If you cant afford that, at least get the GTX 560.
Answer #3
GTX 560TI 1GB should be fine for pretty much any game
Answer #4
GTX 560 is expensive. It’s like 2x the price of GTX 550 Ti. Is it really not a big upgrade from GTS 250 to GTX 550 Ti?

No, it’s not x2 the price. 550 ti goes for ~$125 and the GTX 560 goes for ~$175 (non Ti).
It’s an upgrade, but not enough more the majority of people to spend a hundred.
Save your money until you can buy a better GPU, or don’t buy one at all. The still GTS 250 is well capable of handling games.

Sure, that’s true. But one game Saint Row: The Third recommended requirement uses full 1GB of graphic. So I would recommend him getting at least 1.5GB to 2GB. 560Ti 2GB EVGA is good choice. ASUS have too many heat, and evga got jet fan. ASUS doesnt.
EDIT: To be honest I have experience with these two video card brand, ASUS and EVGA. I much prefer EVGA myself but hey that’s me, and also good thing about EVGA have lifetime warranty when ASUS doesnt so have it your way. My opinions told the truth here. Jet fan are much better and faster then standard fans on ASUS.

+1 don’t buy aything less than a 560 (id even say 560ti!) but do NOT buy the 550 gtx. just wait till you got more money in this case.
gaming cards start from x6x for nvidia (so 460 gtx, 470, 480, 560, 570, 580,…) and at x7xx for ati cards (so 4870,5750,5850,5950,6850,6870…)
all that is lower is not made for gaming.

The Asus one will circulate hot air inside the case, that isn’t desirable.

Its a bit of examining the card and applying a bit of common sense, most people forget that, but its fine.
You see the shroud of the cooler attached to the video card’s cooler is completely covering the video card and the rear shield has vent holes.
Completely covering the cooler is good since it promises that the air will travel in the designed pathways, this however is still a flaw as there can be back draft from the air pushing against the sides of the shroud, since you usually want the air to go in one direction and that is towards the back of the case.
To avoid excess dust buildup and other hazards, the rear I/O shield of the video card has been designed with minimal lengths and widths of the venting holes.
This of course also limits the amount of air getting outwards which hurts airflow a bit.
The Asus solution is a complete failure, the air will circulate inside of the case.
While the heatpipes could in fact make the GPU slightly cooler, the problem comes to a few quirks.
1. The heatpipe is cut flat to be aligned with the base of the cooler which touches the GPU, this will pose a air-gap since you can’t really make those surfaces with a pipe more smoother.
2. The pipe welded or screwed in will not have a perfect contact with the other base.
3. Replacing the thermal paste, you will notice that the footprint may not be that good.
I can’t imagine that adding pipes to an already difficult cleaning problem even more difficult.
Copper is somewhat tricky to clean.

So you mean it’s better if I buy GTX 460 than GTX 550 Ti?

Buddy if you want to play games without any problem then buy “Nvidia Geforce Brand” only. I have:
1) Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz
2) 3 GB RAM
3) Windows 7 Ultimate N Edition x86
4) XFX Nvidia Geforce GT240 – DDR-III – 1GB Express Graphic Card
I played following recent game on full high settings:
1) Need for Speed the Run
2) Call of Duty Moden Warfare 3
3) Assassin’s Creed Revelations
4) Saints Row: The Third
5) Rage
and now starting “Batman Arkham City” on full high settings.
I didn’t face any problem like texture, lagging, sound problem or any other problem like physx as I Noticed that other brand’s Cards always require updates / fix to get run the new game without any error whereas Nvidia release Driver updates only after 2 – 3 months.
So I suggest go with Nvidia Geforce Card which have DirectX 11 technology i.e. latest cards.

are you actually MAD ? unless hes on an insane resolution he will not need that at all. i can say for sure that a gtx 560 1GB will run pretty much any game on high/max settings at 1920*1080.

the gtx 460 1GB is better then the 550, but also uses more power
